Follow the Beat

This is a boy playing piano.

Okay, we’re into the whole music thing now, right? You have a fav song, don’t you? It wasn’t always your fav. This time last month, it was most likely a different one. It was different this time last year.

Take a moment to recall last year’s fav song. How did it make you feel? Oh yeah, you know where this is going, don’t you? We’re heading into how music makes us happy, sad, or angry.

Annnnd, we know how our brains work better if the happy chemicals buzz. So, why don’t we bring the two of them together? Why not listen to music while you’re doing something else? I will take a chance here and say while you’re doing homework or working on an assignment for school.

If you’re in high school, listening to music while you’re studying for an exam will help your memory. How?

Our brains work to a rhythm. You only have to walk around a room to figure that out. We take one step, then another, followed by another. A neat 1-2 pattern. Clap your hands in time to some music. It’s easy to follow the beat, right?

Try to clap your hands out of time with the beat. You won’t keep it up for long. Your brain will pull you into line within a few seconds, and you’ll clap in time.
